KNOXVILLE, Tennessee - Team USATF women secured their ninth consecutive win over Germany in the heptathlon at the 25th Thorpe Cup, held this year at the University of Tennessee. On the men’s side, an American snagged the individual title in the decathlon and Team USATF men finished second.

The women of Team USATF, led by Coach Chris Richardson, totalled 17809 points, succeeding Germany’s 17575 point effort in the heptathlon. On the men’s side, Germany gathered 38915 points to surpass the 37902 total of the U.S. decathletes led by Coach Kip Javrin.

Individually, Steve Bastien (Saline, Michigan) of the U.S. placed first among the men with a total point score of 7980. Solomon Simmons (Murrieta, California) gathered 7919 points, good for a third place finish in the decathlon. For the women, Lindsay Schwartz (Watertown, Wisconsin) secured 6050 points to place second and Allison Reaser (El Segundo, California) earned a score of 5910 for third in the heptathlon.

On day one, the men kicked off competition with the 100m dash. Steve Bastien crossed the finish first for the U.S. in 10.61, good for 949 points and second place in the race overall. Solomon Simmons came in fourth with a time of 10.80. The decathletes then moved on to the long jump, where the leading American, Tim Ehrhardt (Addison, Illinois), came in fourth with a leap of 7.35m/24-1.5.

Next, Solomon Simmons had the top throw of any American in the shot put. He placed third in the event, earning 768 points with a toss of 14.64m/48-00.5. High jump followed, with Charlie Card-Childers (Houston, Texas) clearing a height of 1.99m/6-6.25 to tie for first. Bastien placed third in the event after leaping 1.96m/6-5. Rounding out the first day of the decathlon was the 400m. Team USATF went 1-2 in the race, with Bastien rounding the track in 47.78 to claim first and Ehrhardt following close behind in 47.85.

On the women’s side, the first day of the heptathlon started out strong for the United States. Team USATF swept the 100m hurdles from first to seventh place, led by Allison Reaser’s time of 13.37, earning 1069 points. Next, Ashtin Zamzow (Goliad, Texas) placed second in the high jump after clearing 1.76m/5-9.25 and earning 928 points.

Shot put was the third event of the day. Annie Kunz (Wheat Ridge, Colorado) and Riley Cooks (Coarsegold, California) obtained marks of 14.42m/47-3.75 for first and 13.87m/45-6.25 for third, respectively. The heptathlon concluded on day one after the 200m. Riley Cooks crossed the finish in a time of 24.39, placing second overall in the race. She was followed closely by teammates Reaser in 24.58 and Schwartz who clocked 24.63.

The second day of competition resumed with the decathlon 110m hurdles. Team USA dominated the event as Solomon Simmons ran 14.44 to take first place and Steve Bastien secured a second place finish with a time of 14.61. Next, the men moved on to the discus throw. Solomon Simmons snagged a 45.84m/150-4 mark, good for second place in the event and 784 points. Markus Ballengee (Moneta, Virginia) followed with a third place 44.58m/146-3 toss. The third event of the day was pole vault, dominated by Tim Ehrhardt and his 5.11m/16-9.25 clearance.

After the conclusion of pole vault, the decathlon moved forward to the javelin throw. Solomon Simmons won the event after his javelin soared to a mark of 61.65m/202-3. Teammate Tim Wunderlich (Westminster, Maryland) followed in second place by securing a 61.47m/201-8 toss. The tenth and final event of the decathlon was the 1500m. Steve Bastien led Team USA with a third place finish and a time of 4:35.67. Markus Ballengee followed, clocking 4:44.84 to finish fourth in the race.

On the second day of the heptathlon, athletes competed in the long jump, javelin throw, and the 800m. Allison Reaser and Lindsay Schwartz captured the longest leaps for Team USA, placing second with 6.13m/20-1.5 and third with a mark of 6.02m/19-9, respectively. Ashtin Zamzow was the American standout in the javelin throw, launching the implement a distance of 51.53m/169-0. Her mark broke the stadium record and the Thorpe Cup meet record by over two meters; she received 890 points.

Team USATF finished strong as American athletes swept first, second, and third place in the final event, the 800m. Reaser completed the two laps in 2:13.20 to come in first. Behind her, Lindsay Schwartz stormed to the finish in 2:13.55 and Alissa Brooks-Johnson (Doty, Washington) clocked 2:13.60.
