BOULDER – University of Colorado assistant track and field coach Lindsey Malone will serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. team competing at the Thorpe Cup (U.S. versus Germany combined events) this Saturday and Sunday (August 7 and 8) in Marburg, Germany.

Malone was chosen to assist former long-time Missouri head coach Rick McGuire with the women’s team which consists of seven females, including CU volunteer assistant coach Emily Pearson. Pearson is making her second consecutive appearance on the team. The men’s team also has seven athletes on the roster.

“I am thrilled to have been selected as a national team coach for the 2010 team,” Malone said. “It is an extreme honor to represent the U.S. and I am humbled by this opportunity.”

This is the first time Malone has been selected to coach a U.S. team and it’s a dream come true to the Colorado native.

“I have always had the highest appreciation of representing the U.S. through athletics. It has been my dream since childhood to wear USA across my shoulders from each of the sports I pursued from figure skating, volleyball, basketball, track and field and even the winter sport skeleton.

“The red, white, and blue athletic spirit runs deep in my family. My brother, sister and I grew up in a home filled with great support and encouragement from our parents to follow our athletic aspirations.  My husband, Casey Malone, is a two-time Olympian in the discus and many-time national team member. He embodies every attribute I have held in high esteem for the pursuit of excellence in athletics and is a daily reminder to follow your dreams.”
